Teahouses (lodges) on the Everest Base Camp trek change as you climb, from comfortable lodges with hot showers to basic rooms at 5,000 m. Here's what to expect at each stop.

Quick answer: Lower villages such as Phakding and Namche have the best lodges, some with attached bathrooms, bakeries and Wi-Fi. Above Dingboche, rooms are simple twin beds with shared toilets and the dining-room stove is the only heat. At Gorak Shep, lodges are basic and busy. Showers, charging and Wi-Fi cost extra and get pricier with altitude.

Village by village

  • Lukla (2,860 m) and Phakding (2,610 m): good lodges, many with attached bathrooms.
  • Namche Bazaar (3,440 m): the best choice, with comfortable lodges, cafés, bakeries and shops.
  • Tengboche (3,860 m): few lodges beside the monastery; book ahead in peak season.
  • Dingboche (4,410 m) and Pheriche (4,240 m): solid lodges for acclimatisation days.
  • Lobuche (4,940 m): simple and cold.
  • Gorak Shep (5,164 m): the most basic and expensive; one night only.
