Gorak Shep, at about 5,164 m, is a cluster of lodges on the edge of a frozen, sandy lakebed at the foot of Kala Patthar. It is the last place to sleep before Everest Base Camp and the starting point for the dawn climb up Kala Patthar. At this altitude, nights are bitterly cold and few people sleep well, but the setting is unforgettable.

Quick answer: Gorak Shep (about 5,164 m) is reached from Lobuche in 2–3 hours. Most trekkers walk to Everest Base Camp in the afternoon, sleep at Gorak Shep, and climb Kala Patthar at dawn before descending. Expect very cold nights and basic lodges.
