Lukla, at 2,860 m, is where most Everest treks begin and end. Its Tenzing-Hillary Airport, renamed in 2008 in honour of the first men to climb Everest, has a short runway that slopes uphill into the mountainside, which makes for one of the most memorable landings anywhere.
Quick answer: Lukla (2,860 m) is a short flight from Kathmandu or, in peak seasons, from Ramechhap. Flights operate in the morning and are often delayed by weather; keep spare days. Baggage is limited to about 15 kg in total. Lukla has lodges, cafés and gear shops.
