Tengboche Monastery stands on a forested ridge at about 3,860 m, with Ama Dablam rising behind it and Everest peeping over the Nuptse–Lhotse wall. Founded in the early 20th century, it is the largest monastery in the Khumbu. It burned down in 1989 and was rebuilt with support from around the world.
