Built in a natural horseshoe on a steep hillside at 3,440 m, Namche Bazaar is the main town of the Khumbu and the place almost every Everest trekker stops for an acclimatisation day. It has lodges, bakeries, gear shops, banks and a busy weekly market, all with views of Kongde, Thamserku and, from just above the town, Everest itself.

Quick answer: Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) is a 2-day walk from Lukla. Spend an acclimatisation day hiking to the Everest View Hotel or Khumjung, visit the Sherpa museum, and enjoy the bakeries. Best time: October–November, March–May.
