Ghorepani, at about 2,860 m, sits on a saddle in the forested hills between Pokhara and the Kali Gandaki. Its name means "horse water", from the days when it was a resting place for mule and pony caravans on the old trade route. Today it is the base for the famous dawn climb to Poon Hill, and a lively village of lodges surrounded by rhododendron forest.
In spring, the forest around Ghorepani turns red and pink with rhododendron blooms; in autumn and winter, the views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South are crisp and clear.
