Since a road reached Lo Manthang, travellers can choose to walk or drive into the former Kingdom of Lo. Both need the Upper Mustang restricted area permit (US$50 per person per day) and a licensed guide.
Quick answer: the trek (about 14 days) is slower and more immersive, through villages and canyons, often avoiding the road. The jeep tour (about 9 days) reaches Lo Manthang in two days from Jomsom, suits travellers short on time or fitness, and is cheaper in permit days.
