In the wide, windswept valley of the Kali Gandaki, Jomsom is the main town of Mustang and the jumping-off point for Muktinath and Upper Mustang.
Quick answer: Jomsom sits at about 2,720 m between Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. Fly from Pokhara in about 20 minutes, or drive the Beni–Jomsom road. Strong winds blow up the valley from late morning, so flights leave early. Nearby, visit Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath.
Things to do
- Visit apple-growing Marpha.
- Explore medieval Kagbeni.
- Pilgrimage to Muktinath; see our Muktinath guide.
- Look for ammonite fossils (shaligram) in the Kali Gandaki.
- Hike to Dhumba Lake or viewpoints.
Getting there
Flights from Pokhara are spectacular but often delayed by wind or cloud. The road via Beni and Tatopani is long and rough.
