Everest Base Camp is the world's most famous trek. But is it worth the time, money and effort? Here's an honest look.

Quick answer: for most trekkers, yes. The scenery, Sherpa culture and the feeling of standing at the foot of Everest are unforgettable. But it is long, high, busy in peak season and depends on Lukla flights. If you want quieter trails, consider Gokyo, the Three Passes or treks in other regions.

Why it's worth it

  • Close views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam.
  • Sherpa villages, monasteries and culture.
  • The classic view from Kala Patthar.
  • Comfortable teahouse lodges.
  • A real sense of achievement.

The downsides

  • Crowds: busy in October–November and April–May.
  • Altitude: base camp is 5,364 m; acclimatisation days are essential.
  • Flights: Lukla flights can be delayed or cancelled.
  • Base camp itself: in autumn it's a rocky glacier with few tents; the best view is from Kala Patthar.
  • Cost: higher than many other treks. See EBC cost.
