Thamel is the busy tourist district of central Kathmandu, a dense grid of narrow lanes packed with guesthouses, hotels, restaurants, bakeries, bookshops, trekking-gear shops, travel agencies and bars. Almost every trekker passes through it, and for many it is a convenient, lively base for a few days before and after the mountains.

Quick answer: Thamel is about 15 minutes' walk north of Kathmandu Durbar Square and around 30 minutes by car from the airport, depending on traffic. Stay here for convenience: food, gear, money changers and live music are all on your doorstep. For a quieter stay, try nearby Lazimpat or Patan.
