Just a few steps from the noise of Thamel, the Garden of Dreams is a walled neo-classical garden of pavilions, ponds, fountains and lawns. It was created in the 1920s by the Rana-era Field Marshal Kaiser Shumsher, fell into ruin over the following decades, and was carefully restored with Austrian support and reopened in the 2000s.
Today it is one of the most peaceful places in central Kathmandu, a lovely spot to read, have coffee or rest between sights.
Quick answer: The Garden of Dreams is at the southern edge of Thamel, next to the Kaiser Mahal. Foreigners pay a small entry fee. Bring a book, sit on the lawns, or have coffee in the café. Allow 1–2 hours.
