Kirtipur sits on a ridge on the south-western edge of the Kathmandu Valley, near Tribhuvan University. This old Newar town is famous for resisting the forces of Prithvi Narayan Shah for years before it fell in the 1760s, shortly before the conquest of Kathmandu. Today it is a quiet place of temples, stupas and traditional houses, with views across the valley.

Quick answer: Kirtipur is about 30 minutes from central Kathmandu. Visit the Bagh Bhairab temple, the Chilancho stupa and the old lanes, and try Newari food. Combine with Chobhar, Bungamati and Khokana.
