South of Patan, the twin villages of Bungamati and Khokana keep a traditional Newar way of life. Bungamati is known for its woodcarvers and as a home of Rato Machhindranath, the rain god whose chariot is pulled through Patan each year; Khokana is famous for its old mustard oil presses. Both were badly damaged in the 2015 earthquake and have been rebuilding since.
Quick answer: Bungamati and Khokana are about 45 minutes from central Kathmandu, or a pleasant cycle ride. Watch woodcarvers at work, visit the Rato Machhindranath temple, and see mustard oil being pressed in Khokana.
