Just south-west of Kathmandu, Kirtipur sits on a ridge with views over the valley. It's an easy half-day trip and a glimpse of traditional Newar life.

Quick answer: Kirtipur is known for the Bagh Bhairav temple, the Chilancho stupa, the Uma Maheshwar temple, narrow lanes and Newari food. Historically it resisted the armies of Prithvi Narayan Shah fiercely during the unification of Nepal.

What to see

  • Bagh Bhairav temple: decorated with old weapons.
  • Chilancho stupa: a Buddhist stupa surrounded by shrines.
  • Uma Maheshwar temple: with views across the valley.
  • Old lanes and courtyards.
