On Nepal's remote treks, accommodation is part of the adventure. Some routes now have simple teahouses all the way; others still need tents for at least part of the trek. Either way, our crew makes sure you are warm, well fed and comfortable.

Quick answer: the Kangchenjunga and Makalu routes have basic teahouses, very simple at the higher stops. Phoksundo and Rara have small lodges, while the Dhaulagiri Circuit and Upper Dolpo require fully supported camping.

Kangchenjunga

The Kangchenjunga Base Camp trek is now possible as a teahouse trek. Lodges in Limbu and Sherpa villages lower down are simple and friendly; higher up, at places such as Ghunsa, Khambachen and Lhonak, they are very basic, with dormitory-style rooms. See our Kangchenjunga guide.

Makalu

On the Makalu Base Camp trek, small lodges serve the route through the Makalu Barun National Park, with very basic shelters on the high sections. Some groups still camp for extra comfort and flexibility.

Dolpo and Phoksundo

In Lower Dolpo, the village of Ringmo beside Phoksundo Lake has a few simple lodges and homestays. Beyond Phoksundo, Upper Dolpo is a restricted area with very few facilities, and treks there are fully supported camping expeditions. See our Shey Phoksundo trek.

Rara

Around Rara Lake, simple lodges and village homestays serve the growing number of visitors; on the trek from Jumla, some stops are basic. See our Rara Lake trek.

Dhaulagiri Circuit

The high section of the Dhaulagiri Circuit, from Italian Base Camp over French Pass and Dhampus Pass, has no lodges, so we camp on glaciers and high meadows with a full crew.

What a camping trek is like

  • Our crew carries and pitches sleeping tents, a dining tent, a kitchen tent and a toilet tent.
  • Cooks prepare hot, fresh meals three times a day, plus tea and snacks.
  • You carry only a daypack; porters or pack animals carry the rest.
  • Bring a four-season sleeping bag; we provide mattresses.
