Kathmandu has a hotel for every budget, from international five-star hotels and restored Rana palaces to family-run guesthouses in the lanes of Thamel. Where you stay makes a big difference to your trip: some areas are lively and convenient, others quiet and green, and a few hotels are attractions in their own right.

Below we list Kathmandu's hotels by their official category, following the member directory of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), and explain the best areas to stay. All of these hotels can be booked as part of a trek or tour with us.

Quick answer: for luxury, stay at a five-star hotel such as Hotel Yak & Yeti, The Dwarika's Hotel, Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, Kathmandu Marriott or Hilton Kathmandu. For good-value comfort close to the sights, choose a four-star such as Hotel Shanker or a three-star in Thamel or Lazimpat. Thamel is the most convenient area for first-time visitors and trekkers; Lazimpat and Durbar Marg are quieter and close by.

Boutique, heritage and budget stays

Many of Kathmandu's most charming places to stay are small boutique hotels and guesthouses in HAN's tourist standard category, below the star ratings. Two well-known examples in Thamel are the Kathmandu Guest House, a Thamel institution since 1967 set around gardens, and Kantipur Temple House, built in traditional Newar style. See hotels in Thamel and budget hotels in Kathmandu. Thamel also has hundreds of simple, friendly guesthouses for trekkers on a budget. For a quieter, more atmospheric stay, consider a restored house in Patan or Bhaktapur.

Tips for choosing a hotel

  • Before a trek: stay in Thamel or nearby, close to gear shops and our office.
  • Early flights: Lukla and mountain flights leave early; hotels in Sinamangal, Boudha or Battisputali are closer to the airport.
  • Noise: Thamel is lively until late; ask for a room away from the street.
  • Power and water: larger hotels have backup generators and filtered water.
  • Peak season: book early for October–November and March–April.
