You don't need a big budget to stay comfortably in Kathmandu. The city has hundreds of small hotels and guesthouses with clean rooms, hot water and friendly owners. Many are in Thamel, but others are spread across quieter neighbourhoods. This guide lists good-value members of the Hotel Association Nepal outside Thamel.
Quick answer: HAN classifies smaller hotels as two-star, one-star or tourist standard. Most have private rooms with bathrooms, Wi-Fi and breakfast. For budget stays close to the sights, look in Thamel, Jyatha, Naxal or near Swayambhu.
