About 27 km west of Lumbini, the archaeological site of Tilaurakot is believed to be the remains of ancient Kapilavastu, capital of the Shakya kingdom, where Prince Siddhartha Gautama grew up before leaving his palace life in search of enlightenment. Brick foundations, a moat, ponds and the eastern gate, through which tradition says he left the palace, lie in a peaceful setting among trees.
