In the far south-west corner of Nepal, Shuklaphanta National Park protects open grasslands (phantas), sal forest and wetlands in Kanchanpur district. It is famous for its large herds of swamp deer (barasingha), and is also home to tigers, elephants, rhinos and a rich variety of grassland birds. Very few foreign travellers visit, so it feels genuinely wild.
Quick answer: Shuklaphanta is near Mahendranagar in the far west, reached by flying to Dhangadhi and driving. Highlights are swamp deer on the grasslands, jeep safaris and birding. Best time: October–April. It combines well with Bardia.
