Pharping, about 20 km south of Kathmandu, is a small Newar town on a hillside that has become one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the valley. Tibetan Buddhists believe Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated in caves here, and the hill is now dotted with monasteries, prayer flags and retreat centres. The Hindu temple of Dakshinkali lies just below.

Quick answer: Pharping is about 1 hour by road from Kathmandu. Visit the Guru Rinpoche caves, the monasteries, and nearby Dakshinkali, and hike to Champadevi for valley views.
