In a forested gorge near Pharping, about 22 km south of Kathmandu, Dakshinkali is one of the most important temples to the goddess Kali in Nepal. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, and especially during Dashain, devotees bring animals for sacrifice at the shrine. It is an intense, colourful and, for many visitors, confronting experience.
Quick answer: Dakshinkali is about 1 hour by road from Kathmandu. The busiest days are Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Non-Hindus can watch from outside the inner shrine. If you prefer not to see animal sacrifice, visit on other days. Combine with the Buddhist monasteries of Pharping and the Champadevi hike.
