Asan is the busiest crossroads of old Kathmandu, where six streets meet on the ancient trade route to Tibet. Traders sell spices, grains, dried fish, brass and festival goods around the gilded Annapurna Ajima temple, dedicated to the goddess of plenty.

Quick answer: Walk from Thamel through Asan and Indra Chowk to Kathmandu Durbar Square in about 30–45 minutes, longer if you stop. Go in the morning, when the market is liveliest.
