Nepalgunj, on the Indian border in the plains of western Nepal, is the hub for travel to the far west. Small planes fly from here to mountain airstrips for Rara Lake (Talcha), Dolpo (Juphal), Simikot (for the Limi valley and the Kailash route) and Jumla, and Bardia National Park is a few hours away by road. Many trekkers spend a night here between flights.
Quick answer: Soaltee Westend is Nepalgunj's five-star hotel, and Hotel Sneha and Hotel Starlight Neel Devi are four-star. Mountain flights leave early in the morning, so stay close to the airport.

The far west: Dhangadhi
In the far west, Dhangadhi is the gateway to Shuklaphanta National Park and Khaptad. Hotel Saathi in Dhangadhi is a HAN one-star member, and the town has several simple hotels.
Tips for Nepalgunj
- It is very hot from April to June; air conditioning is essential.
- Mountain flights often leave at dawn and can be delayed by weather in the hills; build a spare day into your plans.
- Remote areas such as Dolpo and Humla require restricted area permits, which must be arranged in advance; we organise these for you.
