Shey Gompa is an ancient monastery in Upper Dolpo, inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, beneath the sacred Crystal Mountain that pilgrims circle in a kora. It became known worldwide through Peter Matthiessen's book The Snow Leopard (1978), about his 1973 journey here with biologist George Schaller.
Quick answer: Shey is reached on the Upper Dolpo trek from Phoksundo over high passes. Upper Dolpo requires an expensive restricted area permit and a camping expedition.
