Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world, is a striking four-sided pyramid east of Everest. Makalu Base Camp, at about 4,870 m in the upper Barun valley, is reached by a demanding trek through Makalu Barun National Park, from subtropical forest to high alpine meadows and glaciers.
