On 16 May 2022, Buddha Jayanti, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, where he was received by Nepal's Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. They prayed at the Maya Devi Temple and laid the foundation stone of the India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in the Lumbini Monastic Zone.
In short: The visit came the same day that Gautam Buddha International Airport near Lumbini welcomed its first international flight.
