Jure Landslide Buries Village and Dams the Sunkoshi River

Early on 2 August 2014, after heavy monsoon rain, a huge slope collapsed above the village of Jure in Sindhupalchok, about 70 km north-east of Kathmandu. The landslide buried homes and a stretch of the Araniko Highway, killing 156 people, and completely blocked the Sunkoshi River, creating a lake about 3 km long behind the debris.

In short: the Jure landslide on 2 August 2014 killed 156 people and dammed the Sunkoshi, forcing evacuations downstream until the water overtopped the debris.
