First Broad-Gauge Passenger Train Links India and Nepal at Janakpur

2 April 2022

On 2 April 2022, Prime Ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba and Narendra Modi flagged off the first passenger train on the Jaynagar–Kurtha line from New Delhi by video link. The 35 km broad-gauge railway runs from Jaynagar in Bihar across the border to Janakpur and on to Kurtha.

In short: It is Nepal's only regular passenger railway and the first broad-gauge passenger link between the two countries. Travellers can take it to Janakpur, home of the Janaki Mandir.

Riding the train

The line has eight stations, including Inarwa (border), Baidehi, Janakpur and Kurtha. Foreign nationals should check border crossing rules before travelling. See India–Nepal border crossings.
