On 27 July 2023, Nepali climber Tenjen (Lama) Sherpa and Norwegian Kristin Harila reached the summit of K2, completing all 14 eight-thousanders in 92 days, starting on Shishapangma in late April. It beat the previous record of six months and six days set by Nirmal Purja in 2019.
In short: Harila insisted the record was shared: Tenjen guided her on every peak. Tragically, Tenjen died in an avalanche on Shishapangma just over two months later.
Controversy on K2
The summit day was overshadowed by the death of Pakistani porter Muhammad Hassan on the route, which prompted debate about climbers passing by. Investigations found teams had tried to help.
