On 19 May 2023, Hari Budha Magar, a former Gurkha soldier, became the first double above-knee amputee to reach the summit of Everest. He lost both legs to an explosive device while serving in Afghanistan in 2010, and climbed to inspire others and change perceptions of disability.

A changed rule

In 2017, Nepal banned solo climbers, blind climbers and double amputees from Everest, but the Supreme Court overturned the ban in 2018, opening the way for his climb.
