Nine Sherpas Reach Everest Summit, First from Nepal in Two Years

11 May 2016

At about 5 pm on 11 May 2016, a team of nine Nepali climbers reached the summit of Everest after fixing ropes all the way from the South Col. They made the first summits from the Nepal side in two years, after the 2014 Khumbu Icefall avalanche and the 2015 earthquake had ended the previous two spring seasons.

In short: a rope-fixing team of nine Nepali climbers reached Everest's summit on 11 May 2016, reopening the mountain after two lost seasons.

The return of the climbing season

With ropes fixed, hundreds of climbers followed in the next weather window, and tourism in the Khumbu began to recover. See our Everest Base Camp guide.
