On 8 December 2020, Nepal and China jointly announced a new official height for Mount Everest: 8,848.86 m, slightly higher than the long-used figure of 8,848 m. The measurement followed survey expeditions by both countries, including Nepal's own team that reached the summit in 2019 to take measurements.
In short: the official height of Everest became 8,848.86 m, announced jointly by Nepal and China on 8 December 2020, including the snow cap.
Why measure again?
There had long been differing figures for Everest's height, and there were questions about whether the 2015 earthquake had changed it. Nepal's survey department sent its first own measurement expedition, and Chinese surveyors measured from the north side.
