In June 2022, Nepali officials told the BBC they were preparing to move Everest Base Camp, which sits on the Khumbu Glacier at about 5,364 m, to a site 200–400 m lower without year-round ice, possibly as soon as 2024. The glacier is thinning, streams cut through the camp and crevasses open more often.
In short: As of 2026, base camp has not moved. Climbing operators argue a lower camp would add a long, risky approach to the Khumbu Icefall. Trekkers still visit the traditional site.
What it means for trekkers
The Everest Base Camp trek ends at the same rocky area on the glacier, with Kala Patthar the best viewpoint. See EBC trek guide and can you sleep at base camp?
