On 29 May 2023, Nepal marked 70 years since Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary became the first people to stand on the summit of Everest, at about 11:30 a.m. on 29 May 1953. The date is celebrated each year as International Everest Day.
In short: The anniversary fell in Everest's busiest and deadliest season, prompting reflection on how far the mountain has changed since 1953, when a British expedition placed two climbers on top.
Then and now
In 1953 the expedition spent weeks establishing the route; today more than 600 people can summit in a season, almost all supported by Nepali climbers. See who first climbed Everest? and how many people have climbed Everest?
