Bidya Devi Bhandari Elected Nepal's First Woman President

On 28 October 2015, Nepal's Parliament elected Bidya Devi Bhandari as the country's first woman President. Twelve days earlier, on 16 October 2015, Onsari Gharti Magar had become the first woman Speaker of Parliament.

In short: Bhandari served two terms, until 2023. In 2016, Sushila Karki became the first woman Chief Justice, so for a time women held the posts of President, Speaker and Chief Justice.

A new constitution, new firsts

The 2015 constitution requires a third of members of Parliament to be women and that the President and Vice-President be of different genders or communities.
