Nepal is relaxed about what visitors wear, but dressing respectfully makes a good impression and helps you feel comfortable in temples and villages. And on treks, the right layers make all the difference.
Quick answer: wear modest, comfortable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, especially at temples and in villages. For treks, use layers: a base layer, fleece, down jacket and waterproof shell. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a warm layer even in the cities, where evenings can be cool.
In cities and temples
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples and monasteries.
- Remove shoes before entering temples and homes; easy-off shoes help.
- Leather items may not be allowed inside some Hindu temples.
- Avoid very revealing clothing outside tourist areas.
For women
Women can wear trousers, long skirts and T-shirts. Loose, light clothing is comfortable and respectful. Read our guide for women trekking in Nepal.
