Booking a Trek Yourself vs With an Agency: Pros and Cons

1 July 2026

Since April 2023, foreign trekkers need a licensed guide in most trekking areas. So the real choice is between arranging a guide yourself and booking through a registered agency.

Quick answer: Arranging things yourself can be cheaper and flexible but means more admin and risk; an agency handles permits, flights, insurance checks, porter welfare and backup if something goes wrong.

Arranging it yourself

  • Potentially lower cost
  • Flexible day by day
  • Direct relationship with your guide

Things to watch

  • You handle permits and bookings
  • Less backup in emergencies
  • Check licences and porter insurance yourself

Booking an agency

  • Permits, flights and lodges arranged
  • Support if flights are cancelled or someone falls ill
  • Clear porter policies and insurance

Things to watch

  • Higher price
  • Less flexibility on fixed departures
  • Choose a reputable company
