# Temple and Monastery Etiquette in Nepal

_Published 12 June 2026_

Nepal's temples, stupas and monasteries are living places of worship. Visitors are welcome, and a few simple customs show respect.

**Quick answer:** Walk **clockwise** around stupas, temples and mani walls. **Remove shoes** (and often hats) before entering shrines and monasteries. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before taking photos of people, rituals or inside temples. Some Hindu temples, such as the main temple at [Pashupatinath](/blog/visiting-pashupatinath-guide), are **closed to non-Hindus**, and some don't allow leather.

## Buddhist sites

- Walk clockwise around stupas and spin prayer wheels clockwise.
- Pass mani stones and chortens on your left (keeping them on your right side).
- In monasteries, sit quietly at the back during prayers; don't point your feet at altars or monks.
- Leave a small donation if you like.

## Hindu temples

- Look for signs about who can enter.
- Leather (belts, bags) may not be allowed inside.
- Don't touch offerings or sacred objects, or people's tika.

## Photography

Photography is usually fine outside; often not inside shrines. At cremation sites, be discreet and respectful. See [photography tips](/blog/himalaya-photography-tips).

## General courtesy

Use your right hand for giving and receiving, don't touch people's heads, and avoid public displays of affection.
