Tansen was the capital of the powerful Palpa kingdom, which controlled much of western Nepal and resisted the Gorkha kings until the early 19th century. Newar traders and craftspeople from the Kathmandu Valley settled here, bringing their architecture, festivals and skills, which is why Tansen's old town, with its brick houses, carved windows and temples, resembles the cities of the Kathmandu Valley. Later, Tansen became an important administrative and trading centre on the route between the hills and the plains. Today, it is a peaceful hill town that sees relatively few foreign visitors.

## What to see in detail

### The old town

Tansen's steep, narrow lanes are lined with traditional Newar houses, shops and shrines. Walking through the bazaar, you will see weavers, metalworkers and shopkeepers at work. The **Amar Narayan Temple**, built in the early 19th century, is a fine three-tiered pagoda with carved roof struts, set in a peaceful courtyard. The **Bhagwati Temple** and **Tansen Durbar**, the old governor's palace, are other landmarks; the Durbar was damaged in the civil conflict and has since been restored.

### Srinagar Danda

A 30–45 minute walk uphill through pine forest from the bazaar leads to Srinagar Danda, a hilltop viewpoint at around 1,500 m with a sweeping panorama of the Himalaya, from Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas to Manaslu on clear days, and over the Kali Gandaki valley to the south. Sunrise and sunset are best.

### Rani Mahal

The [Rani Mahal](/places/rani-mahal-palpa) ("queen's palace") stands on the banks of the Kali Gandaki river, a few hours' walk or drive from Tansen. It was built in the 1890s by Khadga Shumsher Rana, an exiled member of the ruling Rana family, in memory of his wife, and is often called the "Taj Mahal of Nepal". The palace, in a European style, sits dramatically above the river gorge, and has been partly restored. The walk down from Tansen through villages and forest is a lovely half-day or full-day hike.

## Dhaka cloth and metalwork

Palpa is famous for **dhaka**, a colourful hand-woven fabric with intricate geometric patterns, used to make the traditional dhaka topi caps worn by Nepali men and shawls and blouses for women. Visit workshops in Tansen to watch weavers at their looms and buy directly from them. Tansen is also known for its metalware, especially the **karuwa**, a traditional brass water jug, and other bronze and copper vessels. See [traditional clothing](/blog/traditional-nepali-clothing).

## Culture and communities

Palpa is home to Magar, Newar, Brahmin and Chhetri communities, among others. Magar villages in the surrounding hills have their own language, dances and festivals, and homestays offer a chance to experience village life. Tansen's Newar community celebrates festivals similar to those in the Kathmandu Valley, including Bhimsen Jatra and Gai Jatra.

## Combining Tansen with other places

Tansen sits on the route between Pokhara and Lumbini, making it a perfect overnight stop on a journey between the two. It also combines with [Ridi Bazaar](/places/ridi-bazaar), a holy town at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Ridi rivers, and with [Bandipur](/blog/bandipur-travel-guide) for travellers interested in Nepal's historic hill towns. See [Lumbini](/blog/lumbini-travel-guide).

## A two-day Tansen itinerary

On the first day, arrive from Pokhara or Lumbini, check into a guesthouse, and walk through the old bazaar to the Amar Narayan Temple and Tansen Durbar. In the late afternoon, climb to Srinagar Danda for sunset over the mountains. On the second day, watch sunrise from Srinagar or your hotel, then hike or drive down to the Rani Mahal on the Kali Gandaki, returning in the afternoon to visit dhaka weaving workshops and metalware shops before continuing your journey.

## Where to stay and eat

Tansen has a small number of guesthouses and hotels, some in traditional buildings with views, and a few homestays nearby. Food is simple and good, with Nepali sets, Newari snacks and local sweets. Try the local specialities in small eateries in the bazaar, and look for Palpali dishes during festivals. Tansen is quiet in the evenings, which many visitors enjoy after busier towns.

## Best time to visit

October to April is ideal, with clear views of the Himalaya from Srinagar Danda in autumn and winter, and pleasant temperatures. Winter mornings can be foggy in the valleys below, creating a sea of clouds. Spring brings warmer days and haze. The monsoon is wet, with fewer views, but the hills are green. See [best time to visit](/blog/best-time-to-visit-nepal).

## Why visit Tansen?

Tansen is one of Nepal's most charming and least-visited hill towns, with history, crafts, mountain views and a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. It is perfect for travellers who want to break the journey between Pokhara and Lumbini or Chitwan, or who enjoy slow travel and culture beyond the main tourist routes.

## Festivals in Tansen

Tansen's Newar community celebrates festivals similar to those in the Kathmandu Valley. Bhimsen Jatra, in late summer, brings a chariot procession through the old town. Gai Jatra and Ropain are celebrated with processions and music, and Dashain and Tihar bring the town to life with lights and family gatherings. Visiting during a festival adds a wonderful dimension to a stay. See [festivals](/blog/festivals-of-nepal).

## Practical tips

- Wear comfortable shoes; Tansen's lanes are steep and cobbled.
- Carry cash; there are ATMs in the bazaar, but card acceptance is limited.
- Bring a warm layer for early mornings at Srinagar Danda.
- Hire a local guide for the Rani Mahal hike if you are unsure of the route.
- Buy dhaka cloth directly from weavers to support local craft.

## Ridi Bazaar

[Ridi Bazaar](/places/ridi-bazaar), a short drive from Tansen, is a holy town at the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Ridi rivers. The Rishikesh Temple, dedicated to Vishnu, attracts pilgrims, especially during the Magh Sankranti festival in January, when devotees bathe in the river. The town also has old Newar houses and a peaceful riverside setting.

## Magar villages and homestays

The hills around Tansen are home to many Magar communities, one of Nepal's largest ethnic groups, known for their history of military service in the Gurkha regiments, their language and their dances. Some villages offer homestays, where visitors stay with families, eat home-cooked meals and see traditional farming. Ask locally or through a tour operator to arrange a stay.
