# Pokhara Nightlife: Lakeside Bars, Live Music and Evenings by Phewa Lake

_Published 18 November 2025_

Pokhara does evenings well. After a day of paragliding, boating or walking the last stretch of the Annapurna trail, you wander down to **Lakeside** as the sun drops behind the hills and the light goes pink on **Machhapuchhre**. The bars light their fire pits, the bands tune up, and the whole strip along **Phewa Lake** settles into a slow, cheerful evening. It is more relaxed than Thamel, with more space, more greenery and a lake breeze. For many trekkers it is the best place in Nepal to celebrate.

**Quick answer:** Pokhara's nightlife is in **Lakeside** (Baidam), along the main road and lanes beside Phewa Lake. Expect **live-music bars**, garden restaurants with **fire pits**, a few clubs, and lots of places for a long dinner. Pokhara was declared Nepal's **tourism capital in 2024** and Lakeside businesses have been allowed longer hours than most of Nepal, though rules have been debated since. Start with **sunset on the lake** or at the **World Peace Pagoda**, then dinner and a band. A large local beer costs about **NPR 600–900**.

### Boating on Phewa Lake

The best way to start an evening in Pokhara is on the water. Hire a colourful wooden boat, with or without a rower, from the boat stations along Lakeside and paddle out as the sun goes down. On clear days the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre reflect in the still water. Stop at **Tal Barahi Temple** on its small island in the lake, a Hindu shrine to the goddess Barahi. Boats need to be back before dark.

### World Peace Pagoda

The white **World Peace Pagoda** stands on a ridge above the southern shore of the lake. You can hike up (about an hour) or take a boat across and climb from the shore, then watch the sunset over the lake, the city and the mountains. Leave in time to get down before dark, or take a taxi back via the road.

### Sunset at the lakeshore

If you'd rather stay put, find a lakeside café or a bench on the shore path and watch the sky change colour with a lassi or a beer.

## Lakeside bars and live music

As darkness falls, Lakeside comes alive. Many bars have live bands most nights, playing classic rock, reggae, blues, acoustic sets and Nepali hits. Some have big gardens with fire pits and cushions, others are small and intimate. A long-running favourite for live music is **Busy Bee Café**, a Lakeside institution with bands, a big garden and a lively crowd, but there are plenty of others, and the line-up changes with the seasons. The best approach is to walk the strip after 8 pm and follow whatever music you like.

Things to know:

- Most bars have no entry fee; you just order drinks and food.
- Happy hours are common in the early evening.
- Bands usually play several sets through the evening.
- In winter, look for places with fire pits; evenings can be cool from December to February.

## Clubs and late nights

Pokhara has a few nightclubs and late bars in Lakeside that get busy later in the evening, especially at weekends and during the peak trekking seasons, with DJs playing international and Nepali music. In March 2024 Pokhara was declared Nepal's tourism capital, and Lakeside businesses were allowed to stay open much later than in the rest of the country. Since then local business groups and authorities have debated limiting late-night hours after complaints about disorder, so check locally what is open late during your visit.

## Cultural evenings

Several restaurants in Lakeside host **cultural dinner shows**, with Nepali food and traditional dances from the Gurung, Magar, Tharu and other communities. Some guesthouses and community groups also organise Gurung cultural programmes, especially around festivals. It is a gentle, family-friendly way to spend an evening. Ask your hotel or our team for recommendations.

## Where and what to eat

Lakeside has a huge range of restaurants. A few ideas:

- **Thakali dal bhat:** the famous set meal from the Kali Gandaki valley, with rice, black lentils, greens, pickles and curry, refilled until you can't eat any more.
- **Fish from the lake:** fried or curried, a Pokhara speciality.
- **International food:** pizza, steaks, Korean, Thai, Israeli, Indian and Western bakeries.
- **Momos and street food:** from small stalls along the lanes.
- **Lakeside garden restaurants** with candles and views of the water.

## Other evening activities

- **Night walk along the lake:** the shore path is pleasant in the early evening, with locals out walking and stalls selling roasted corn.
- **Shopping:** Lakeside's shops stay open into the evening; good for Tibetan handicrafts, pashminas and trekking gear.
- **Massage and spa:** plenty of places offer massages, ideal after a trek. Choose a reputable spa.
- **Stargazing:** on clear nights, the sky over the lake is excellent once you are away from the brightest lights.
