# Nepal in August: Monsoon Festivals, Green Valleys and Rain-Shadow Treks

_Published 30 August 2025_

August is the heart of the monsoon in Nepal. The hills are an intense green, rice paddies shine in the valleys, waterfalls pour off every cliff, and the mountains spend most of their time hidden in cloud. It is also one of the most festive months in the Kathmandu Valley. Trekking is limited to the rain-shadow regions, and travel needs patience and flexibility, but August has a beauty of its own.

**Quick answer:** August is **peak monsoon**: frequent heavy rain, high humidity, cloud over the mountains, and a real risk of **landslides and floods**. Kathmandu is about **27–29°C** by day. The best treks are in the **rain shadow**: **Upper Mustang**, **Nar Phu**, the upper **Annapurna Circuit** and **Dolpo**. Festivals include **Janai Purnima**, **Gai Jatra**, **Krishna Janmashtami** and often **Teej**. Travel with spare days and check road conditions.

August usually brings the most consistent rain of the year. It often rains at night and in the afternoon, with misty mornings in between, and some days it rains almost continuously. The rivers run high and brown, and landslides block mountain roads for hours or days at a time. In the Terai, flooding can affect villages and roads. In late August 2026, a sudden flood on the Bhotekoshi devastated Rasuwa and the Trishuli valley, a reminder that monsoon hazards are real. Read our [news report](/news/bhotekoshi-flood-rasuwa-august-2026).

Despite this, many days have a few hours of sunshine, and the landscape is at its most beautiful: emerald rice terraces, tumbling waterfalls and clouds drifting across forested ridges.

## Where to trek in August

- **[Upper Mustang](/upper-mustang-trek)**: the classic monsoon trek, dry and sunny behind the Himalaya.
- **[Nar Phu](/nar-phu-valley-trek)** and the upper **[Annapurna Circuit](/annapurna-circuit-trek)**: much drier than the lower Annapurnas, though the drive in can be affected by landslides.
- **[Phoksundo Lake](/shey-phoksundo-lake-trek)**: dry in Dolpo, but Juphal flights are often delayed.
- **Tibet**: the Tibetan plateau is in the rain shadow; check our [Lhasa tour](/lhasa-tour-from-kathmandu) and [Kailash Mansarovar Yatra](/kailash-mansarovar-yatra), which runs in the summer months.

Most other treks, including Everest, Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, are wet, leechy and cloudy in August. They are possible for keen trekkers with flexible dates, but not recommended for a first visit. See our [monsoon trekking guide](/blog/trekking-in-nepal-in-monsoon).

## Festivals in August

### Janai Purnima

On the full moon of the month of Shrawan, usually in August, Hindu men renew their sacred thread (janai), and people of many communities tie a protective yellow thread (raksha bandhan) around their wrists. Thousands of pilgrims traditionally walk to the sacred lake of [Gosainkunda](/places/gosainkunda-lake), and shamans (jhankri) gather at Kumbheshwar temple in Patan.

### Gai Jatra

**Gai Jatra**, the "cow festival", is held the day after Janai Purnima. Families who have lost someone during the year join a procession through the old cities, with cows or children dressed as cows, to help the departed on their journey. Over time it has also become a day of satire and comedy. Bhaktapur's celebrations are especially colourful.

### Krishna Janmashtami

The birth of Krishna is celebrated in August or early September, most famously at the **Krishna Mandir** in [Patan Durbar Square](/places/patan), where devotees sing and keep vigil through the night.

### Teej

**Teej**, a festival of Hindu women, falls in August or September. Women dressed in red gather to sing, dance and fast, especially at Pashupatinath.

## Safety in the monsoon

- **Check road conditions** before every journey; landslides can close roads suddenly.
- **Avoid riverbanks** during heavy rain, and never cross flooded streams.
- **Keep spare days** for delays.
- **Follow local advice** and your guide's judgement.
- **Insurance**: make sure it covers delays, cancellations and evacuation.

## Other things to do in August

- **Kathmandu Valley**: festivals, temples and green countryside. See our [Kathmandu sightseeing tour](/kathmandu-sightseeing-day-tour).
- **Pokhara**: lush and quiet, with waterfalls at their best at [Davis Falls](/places/davis-falls-gupteshwor-cave).
- **Cultural tours** to [Bandipur](/places/bandipur) and [Tansen](/places/tansen-palpa).
