# Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Nepal?

_Published 26 September 2026_

Stomach problems are the most common health issue for visitors to Nepal, and contaminated water is a common cause. The good news: safe water is easy to find if you know what to do.

**Quick answer:** **no, don't drink tap water in Nepal**, including in Kathmandu. Drink treated, filtered or boiled water. On treks, use a **water filter or purification tablets**, or buy boiled water from lodges, instead of plastic bottles. Use treated water for brushing your teeth too.

## In cities

- Most hotels provide filtered drinking water; ask before drinking.
- Many cafés and shops in Thamel and Lakeside offer refills.
- Avoid ice unless you know it is made from treated water.
- Wash fruit in treated water, or peel it.

## On treks

- Bring a reliable water filter or purifier bottle, or purification tablets or drops.
- Lodges sell boiled water, which you can treat again if you want extra safety.
- Some trekking areas have safe-water refill stations.
- Plastic bottles add to waste problems in the mountains; parts of the Everest region have restricted single-use plastic bottles.

## Staying hydrated at altitude

Drinking enough water helps you cope with altitude. Aim for several litres a day on trek. See our [altitude sickness guide](/blog/altitude-sickness-nepal-trekking).

## If you get sick

Rest, drink oral rehydration solution and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or persist. See [health and vaccinations for Nepal](/blog/vaccinations-and-health-for-nepal).
